How to Replace an audi a3 replacement key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

    1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test since there are different pins on the connector and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this part, check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

    2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive decrease in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I placed a tissue over each injector hole, and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I get zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is plugged in but it still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

    3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is simple to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They should be infinite ohms.

    4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. To do this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger the engine shutting down.

The signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or a misfire when you're in gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is likely that your sensor is failing and needs replacing. They are cheap and easy-to-find, especially in the case of a Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this component is also a good option.

    5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a variety of issues in your car. It's a vital component of your audi a3 spare key's transmission, because it communicates to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is turning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other audi car keys replacement components to be affected.

Peugeot-2021-New-Black.pngThe G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It transmits a signal via gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost, and also sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should see an average resistance of 1000 ohms in these areas. This is the same across the replacement audi a3 key a4 key (mouse click for source) 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 Du You may also find good ones in wrecking yards.
